January . . . Writing Prompt

For January, let's go somewhere new . . .take a stroll over to my blog and read part 1 of "Write This, Not That." Then come back . . .

Back already? Great! Now here's your challenge:

Write about a New Year's Resolution gone bad -- really bad -- without using the obvious . . .

• 2012
• happy
• bad
• worse

Before you begin, make your own list of words or pre-fab phrases to avoid, then go for it! You'll be pleasantly surprised at how telling your left-over, non-obvious words will be.

December Meeting

Important Changes Concerning December Meeting Times

Pekin Writers Group will be meeting only once in December. Please make a note of the date since we usually meet twice each month.

November Writing Prompt

Use the cliche "drown your sorrows" and write a scene or a story in which the words, the tone and the content revolve around a character drowning his/her sorrows without ever using the phrase "drown your sorrows."  Remember, no alterations of the phrase are acceptable either.....no "drowning your sorrows," no "sorrows were drowned," etc.

This is a chance to use alternate words for drowning and sorrows or to create word pictures that convey drowning, sorrows, etc.

Get creative!

The Pekin Writer's Group meets on the first and third Thursdays of each month.

Please note, that the second meeting for October (Oct 20) has been cancelled. We expect to see everyone again on November 3.

October Writing Prompt

2 Plus 1 Prompt

Write a scene (or a story) in which two characters are discussing something that happened over a year ago. One of them cannot remember the incident, but the other can.

Then, add a third character to the mix . . . but here's the challenge: this third character must be non-human. Non-human can be the setting, the weather, an animal, a spirit, a Smurf . . . anything that is non-human but has a definite voice in the scene. 

Don't forget to use all the senses when writing: taste, smell, sound, touch, sight!

Thanks again to everyone who provided input at the last meeting concerning the "what is" and "what is not" working concerning our group.

Your honesty and sharing are a valuable part of what makes us unique as a group and what will spur us onward as writers.

I believe we have what it takes to be a great critique group! More importantly, I believe with all my heart, that we each have within us what it takes to become extraordinary writers!

September Writing Prompt

Sorry this is late . . .

Write a scene in which two people are having a heated, nasty argument.

Write the scene using only dialogue and convince the reader that the two people love each deeply.
